Accident – Death – Obituary News : Renowned actor and comedian Richard Lewis’ official cause of death has been revealed. According to his death certificate obtained by The Blast, Lewis passed away on February 27 at 9:22 p.m. The cause of death was listed as cardiopulmonary arrest, with Parkinson’s disease identified as the secondary cause.
Cardiopulmonary arrest occurs when there is a loss of adequate heart function and respiration, often leading to death. This condition is commonly seen in patients with coronary artery disease, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Lewis, who was 76 at the time of his passing, had been battling Parkinson’s disease since 2021. In April 2023, he announced his diagnosis and revealed that he had decided to step away from comedy as a result. Despite his health challenges, Lewis remained resilient and continued to fight the disease in the years following his diagnosis.
The late actor will be laid to rest at the Temple of Aaron Cemetery in Roseville, Minnesota, according to The Blast. Lewis’ representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment from PEOPLE.
Lewis’ publicist, Jeff Abraham, confirmed his death in a statement to PEOPLE on February 28, stating that the actor passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles after suffering a heart attack. Abraham also conveyed thanks from Lewis’ wife, Joyce Lapinsky, for the outpouring of love and support, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
HBO, the network that airs Curb Your Enthusiasm, expressed sadness at the loss of Lewis, praising his comedic talent and wit. Lewis had expressed a desire to return to the show in his later years, despite facing health challenges such as back surgeries for excruciating pain.
