20-Year-Old Farmington Hills Man Charged in Brutal Attack on 80-Year-Old at Family Fitness Center
Last week, Oakland County prosecutors charged a 20-year-old Farmington Hills man in connection with a horrific attack on an 80-year-old man at the Farmington Family YMCA on Farmington Road. The incident, which took place on Friday, March 1, left the victim in critical condition.

Altercation at the YMCA
The altercation reportedly began when words were exchanged between the suspect, identified as Malik Ali Smith, and the victim at around 10:45 a.m. A witness at the scene heard a physical altercation and rushed to intervene. It is alleged that Smith slammed the elderly man’s head into the counter before attempting to flee the scene.
Swift Apprehension by Law Enforcement
Despite fleeing the YMCA shirtless, Smith was quickly located by law enforcement officers after a member of the public reported suspicious activity about a mile away. Multiple agencies joined forces, utilizing tracking dogs and a drone to locate and arrest the suspect.

Charges and Court Appearance
Smith was charged with assault with intent to murder, a serious offense that carries a potential life sentence. During his arraignment in the 47th District Court, Magistrate Michael Sawicky ordered him to be held on a $250,000 cash or surety bond with no 10 percent option. Smith remains in custody at the Oakland County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on March 13.
