SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A fundraiser has been set up to assist the family of a 3-year-old boy who tragically lost his life at the hands of his mother’s partner in Santa Clara.

Ivan Martinez-Alvarado was fatally shot in the head during the early hours of Feb. 20 while he was peacefully sleeping in his crib at his home in Riley Square Apartments.
The alleged perpetrator has been identified as 24-year-old Sergio Colin Gomez. He has been formally charged with the heinous crimes of murder and assault on a child under the age of 8.
If found guilty, Gomez could face a sentence of life imprisonment.
“[Ivan] was a delightful and lively 3-year-old from Santa Clara…he found joy in everything around him and loved to discuss what sparked his imagination,” highlighted the GoFundMe campaign.
Ivan would have celebrated his 4th birthday on Aug. 4.
“As friends of the family, we have united to appeal to you for assistance in supporting [Ivan’s mother] as she endeavours to cope and recover,” expressed the GoFundMe appeal.
Donations made to the fundraiser will aid in covering funeral costs and securing a new residence.
Ivan’s mother is currently expecting a child with Gomez. It should be noted that Gomez is not the biological father of Ivan.
Authorities have revealed that the tragic incident stemmed from a dispute where Gomez accused Ivan’s mother of being unfaithful and attempted to coerce a confession. The mother sought refuge in her son’s room and locked the door, but Gomez forcibly entered, exited, and re-entered brandishing a firearm.
Prosecutors allege that Gomez aimed the gun at Ivan’s head, and when the mother reached for the weapon, Gomez discharged the fatal shot that claimed Ivan’s life.
Gomez was apprehended following a brief altercation with law enforcement in the vicinity.
