Increased funding for traffic safety initiatives

This year, city officials have allocated $1.4 million towards traffic safety initiatives, doubling the amount set aside for such efforts last year. The focus will be on areas with high rates of injuries and fatalities, although specific details on project timelines and locations have not yet been released.

Ramping up traffic calming efforts

The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) was established in 2016 to address traffic safety concerns in the city. DOMI Director Kim Lucas stated that the increased budget will allow for a ramping up of traffic calming efforts, particularly in areas where serious crashes have been identified.

Reducing speeding and pedestrian-involved crashes

Traffic calming projects will include the installation of speed humps, flex posts, bump outs, improved traffic signals, and pedestrian countdown timers. According to DOMI data, speed humps have reduced speeding by 55%, while prohibiting right turns on red lights has decreased pedestrian-involved crashes by 60%.

Priority roads for safety improvements

Priority roads for safety improvements include Bennett Street, Frankstown Avenue, Penn Avenue, Liberty Avenue, and Grant Street. Officials are working to address a backlog of approximately 1,000 traffic safety requests throughout the city, prioritizing roads and intersections based on crash history and other factors.

Call for state support and driver responsibility

City officials are calling on state leaders to permit the use of automatic speeding enforcement to help achieve Vision Zero goals. They are also urging city drivers to drive safely, obey speed limits, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists to help reduce fatal crashes.

Mayor Ed Gainey emphasized the importance of coming together as a community to save lives and make the city’s streets safer. With a focus on collaboration and shared responsibility, Pittsburgh is committed to achieving its Vision Zero goals.
