Man dead, suspect injured in Mebane home invasion shootout

An Orange County man, Jerry Lee Driggers, 58, tragically lost his life in the early hours of Sunday morning during an alleged home invasion in Mebane, North Carolina. The incident resulted in a shootout between Driggers and three intruders, leaving one suspect, Clarence Brandon Hayes, 28, injured and facing multiple charges.

Details of the incident

Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported home invasion in Mebane just before 1 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Driggers with a gunshot wound and immediately provided aid before transporting him to Duke University Hospital. Unfortunately, Driggers succumbed to his injuries during surgery.

The other residents in the home recounted being held at gunpoint by the intruders, who were armed as well. The preliminary investigation revealed that Driggers fired a shotgun at the suspects in self-defence, with one of them being struck by his gunfire. In retaliation, one of the intruders also fired back, resulting in Driggers being hit.

Suspect in custody

Deputies located one of the suspects, Clarence Brandon Hayes, in the parking lot of a nearby business with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Hayes, a 28-year-old from Durham, underwent surgery at a local hospital and remains there under police custody. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, felony conspiracy, and injury to real property.

Ongoing investigation

Authorities conducted a K-9 track that indicated two other intruders fled the scene in a vehicle. Described as men in masks and all-black clothing by the residents, these suspects are still at large. Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood extended his condolences to Driggers’ family and emphasised that the incident appears to be isolated, with no indication that the remaining perpetrators are in the immediate vicinity.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. The community is asked to report any suspicious activities that may assist in resolving the case.
