The Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding a home invasion just before 1 a.m. Deputies arrived at the scene to find two individuals inside the home, along with a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound.

The victim, identified as Jerry Lee Driggers, aged 58, was promptly transported to Duke University Hospital for medical treatment. Despite efforts to save his life, Driggers tragically succumbed to his injuries while in surgery. Fortunately, the other residents present in the home during the invasion were unharmed physically, although they reported being held at gunpoint by the intruders.

Initial investigations by the sheriff’s office indicate that Driggers had fired a shotgun at three alleged intruders, who were reportedly armed as well. In the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspected intruders was struck by Driggers’ shots. It was determined that someone from the group of intruders had also returned fire, ultimately hitting Driggers.

One of the suspects, identified as Clarence Brandon Hayes, aged 28 and from Durham, was found in a nearby business parking lot with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Hayes underwent surgery at a local hospital and remained under medical care as of Sunday afternoon. He is now facing multiple charges including first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, felony conspiracy, and injury to real property.

A K-9 track at the scene suggested that two other intruders had fled in a vehicle. Descriptions provided by the residents indicated that the suspects were masked and dressed in all-black clothing.
