The Smoke Shop Shooting in Indianapolis

In a tragic incident that shook the community of Indianapolis, two men have been sentenced for their roles in a fatal 2022 smoke shop shooting. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Jalen Frierson and Hakeem Jackson were both implicated in the killing of Eric Preer.

The Sentences

Jalen Frierson has been sentenced to a total of 86 years in jail, with 76 years to be served in the Indiana Department of Correction. Originally sentenced to 81 years, Frierson received an additional five years for a violation of probation. He will be eligible for work release with Marion County Community Corrections for five years of his sentence.

Hakeem Jackson, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. Jackson was sentenced to 21 years in prison, with 17 years to be executed in the Indiana Department of Correction.

The Incident

According to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Frierson and Jackson entered a smoke shop on N. College Ave where Preer was working on April 23, 2022. Security camera footage showed the two men approaching Preer before Frierson fired multiple shots at him. They fled the scene after the shooting.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detective later located the suspects’ vehicle at an apartment complex near the smoke shop. A chase ensued, and Jackson was taken into custody when the vehicle came to a stop. A 9mm handgun, identified as the murder weapon, was found inside the vehicle.

Justice for Eric Preer

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed his condolences, stating, “Eric Preer was a son, a father, an uncle, and a friend, who was simply working to provide for himself and his family when he was senselessly killed.” He commended the efforts of the deputy prosecutors, investigators, and witnesses for their contributions that led to justice for Preer and his family.
