Arrest made in shooting of 3-year-old girl in Santa Ana, California

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) — Less than two weeks after a gang-related shooting left a 3-year-old girl in critical condition, a 20-year-old suspect has been arrested, officials said Monday.

The suspect, identified as Angel Castillo, 20, of Santa Ana, was taken into custody on Thursday. He is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, criminal street gang activity, and discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.

The incident occurred on Feb. 25 at around 8 p.m. when the shooter approached a vehicle near the intersection of 15th and Spurgeon streets and opened fire. The vehicle was being driven by a woman, with her boyfriend in the front passenger seat. The woman’s two daughters, aged 3 and 4, were seated in the back.

Authorities believe that the intended target of the shooting was the woman’s boyfriend, who is a documented gang member. Although he escaped unhurt, the 3-year-old girl in the backseat was struck by at least one bullet. She was quickly transported to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where she underwent successful surgery.
