Female Cyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Incident in Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave

New Delhi: A tragic incident occurred in the Safdarjung Enclave area of southwest Delhi on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a female cyclist after she was struck by a pickup van. The driver of the van has been taken into custody by the police. The victim, identified as Pretty Gupta from Noida sector 78, was a member of a cycling group and was on her way from Noida to Dhaula Kuan.

Upon receiving a distress call from the police control room, a team was dispatched to the scene of the accident. They found the woman lying on the road near the AIIMS flyover. DCP Rohit Meena stated that Gupta, aged 45, was hit from behind by a vehicle that then collided with a road divider. The driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. A fellow member of the cycling group immediately contacted the police control room. The victim was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Eye Witness Account of the Tragic Incident

Speaking to TOI, a cyclist who was part of the group recalled that the incident occurred around 6:20 am on Saturday. “We were planning to reach INA Market via the flyover. Considering the risks involved in cycling in heavy traffic, we decided to dismount and walk with our bicycles,” the cyclist explained.

The victim and two other cyclists were waiting for some vehicles to pass when a pickup van suddenly swerved towards them. It collided with the first cyclist’s bike and tragically crushed Gupta under its wheels, narrowly missing the third cyclist. “The driver claimed that his tyres burst, but upon inspection, I found no evidence of such damage,” the cyclist stated. “While we were tending to the victim, the driver fled the scene.” The cyclist also checked the van’s MOT certificate and insurance, discovering that both had expired.

Arrest of the Driver

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Sajeev Pathak from Etah, was apprehended at his residence in Bata Chowk, Faridabad. “At the time of the incident, he was en route from South Extension to Dhaula Kuan to deliver some goods in his pickup vehicle,” revealed a police officer.
