Border Patrol agents at the El Centro Sector checkpoint in Indio reported that a ride-share taxi driver with four passengers arrived at the inspection area, situated on Highway 86 near the Salton Sea, around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Subsequently, the vehicle was directed to the secondary inspection area for a more thorough investigation. A K-9 unit, specialized in detecting concealed humans and narcotics, was given permission by the taxi driver to search the vehicle.

The K-9 alerted officials to the trunk of the vehicle, which contained multiple bags, and then specifically identified a backpack and a speaker. A passenger, who was not identified by name but confirmed as a U.S. citizen, claimed ownership of both items.

Upon searching the backpack and speaker, Border Patrol agents discovered “several wrapped packages consistent with wrapping commonly used for transporting illegal narcotics,” as stated by the agency.

A sample taken from one of the wrapped packages tested positive for fentanyl. The packages were found to contain 9.7 pounds of fentanyl pills, with an estimated street value of $130,000, according to CBP.

The passenger was arrested and handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The El Centro Sector announced that the seizure was part of Operation Apollo, a collaborative regional initiative involving federal, state, and local agencies to combat the threat of fentanyl and other illicit synthetic narcotics.

In recent days, the checkpoint disclosed that they have also apprehended a fugitive wanted for federal probation violation related to cocaine smuggling, a criminal with a no-bail felony warrant from San Bernardino, 9.3 pounds of marijuana, 6.5 pounds of meth, and $31,794.
