Tragic Death of Nex Benedict Sparks Investigation into Bullying at Owasso High School

The community of Owasso, Oklahoma, is reeling from the tragic death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict, who passed away a day after a fight inside a girls’ toilet at Owasso High School. Family members have revealed that Nex had been a victim of bullying.

Nex, who identified as non-binary and used they/them pronouns, was involved in the altercation on February 8, but police have not disclosed the cause of death, stating that it was not a result of injuries sustained during the fight.

Investigation Launched into School’s Response to Harassment

Following the incident, the Human Rights Campaign addressed a letter to the Department of Education, urging an investigation into Owasso Public Schools’ handling of sex-based harassment that may have contributed to Nex’s death.

The Office for Civil Rights has confirmed that they will be looking into whether the school district failed to appropriately respond to allegations of harassment, particularly related to Nex’s non-binary identity.

Community Calls for Justice

A walkout in memory of Nex took place at Owasso High School, with community members participating in a candlelight vigil to honour the teenager’s life. Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson has emphasised the urgency of the investigation to ensure justice for Nex and the safety of all students at the school.

Nex’s mother, Sue Benedict, has recounted the injuries sustained by Nex during the fight, involving a transgender pupil and three older girls. The school district has stated that the altercation was swiftly broken up by other students and staff members.

Commitment to Cooperation

Owasso Public Schools have acknowledged the investigation and labelled the allegations as unsupported and without merit. However, they have expressed their commitment to cooperating with federal officials throughout the process.

As the community mourns the loss of Nex Benedict, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding their death is ongoing, with hopes for justice and accountability in the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy.
