NAPLES Authorities Release Details on Shooting Incident

NAPLES, Utah (ABC4) — Authorities in Naples have provided more information about the recent shooting incident that left two individuals in critical condition. The suspect, identified as Mara Ashley Anderson, 28, is facing multiple charges including two counts of attempted aggravated murder and assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Incident Details

The incident unfolded around noon when Naples authorities received a distress call from a man claiming he had been shot by Anderson. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers found a 28-year-old female bleeding in an open garage area. Subsequently, they discovered a 35-year-old male with a gunshot wound in his abdomen.

One of the responding officers revealed that he encountered Anderson outside the residence. Despite recognizing her from previous interactions, the officer noted that Anderson was wearing a wig and a hat at the time, as detailed in the affidavit.

Confrontation with Law Enforcement

The officer attempted to apprehend Anderson, instructing her to raise her hands and cease walking towards him. Despite repeated commands and even drawing his weapon, Anderson persisted in advancing towards the officer. At a close range of 3 to 5 feet, she allegedly retrieved a gun from her bag, initiating a physical struggle with the officer to gain control of the weapon.

With assistance from another officer, Anderson was placed in handcuffs and subdued before being transported into custody. During the arrest, Anderson reportedly made incriminating statements, suggesting a desire to be killed rather than facing imprisonment.

Victims’ Accounts

Statements from the victims indicated that an argument within the residence had escalated to the shooting incident. The female victim recounted how she was shot in the hand while attempting to dial emergency services. Fortunately, the gun malfunctioned with a live round jammed inside, preventing further harm.

Medical Update

Both victims were rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to the University of Utah Medical Center in critical condition. Subsequent updates from the Naples Police Department revealed that the female victim’s condition had improved, while the male victim remained critical but stable, showing signs of positive progress.

Legal Proceedings

Anderson is currently detained at the Uintah County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. It is important to note that charges against her are mere allegations, and all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
