Accident – Death – Obituary News : The US Department of Education has announced an investigation into the Oklahoma school district following the tragic death of a non-binary high school student, Nex Benedict. Nex, a 16-year-old student at Owasso High School, passed away a day after a fight in a girls’ toilet. Family members have reported that Nex was a victim of bullying.

Nex, who identified as non-binary and used they/them pronouns, was involved in the altercation on February 8. While the cause of death has not been officially released by the police, it has been stated that the death was not a result of injuries sustained during the fight.

The investigation was prompted by a letter from the Human Rights Campaign, which raised concerns about the district’s response to sex-based harassment that may have contributed to Nex’s death. The Office for Civil Rights will be looking into whether the district failed to appropriately address the alleged harassment.

Owasso Public Schools have acknowledged receipt of the investigation notice and have stated that they will cooperate with federal officials. They have denied the allegations of unsupported and meritless claims.

The circumstances leading to the fight have not been fully disclosed by either the police or school officials. However, Nex’s family has indicated that the teenager faced harassment due to their non-binary identity.

Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, has called for urgent action to ensure justice for Nex and to create a safe environment for all students at Owasso High School and across Oklahoma.

Following the fight, Nex was taken to the hospital by their family and returned home the same night. The next day, paramedics were called to the home for a medical emergency, and Nex was taken to the hospital where they later passed away.

Nex’s mother, Sue Benedict, has reported that Nex had visible bruises on their face and eyes following the altercation involving a transgender student and three older girls. The school district has stated that the fight was quickly broken up by other students and staff members.

The tragic incident has sparked a call for increased awareness and action to prevent bullying, harassment, and discrimination in schools, ensuring the safety and well-being of all students..
