Federal Officials Launch Investigation into Oklahoma School District Following Death of Non-Binary Teen

OKLAHOMA CITY — The U.S. Department of Education has announced that they will be opening an investigation into the Owasso Public Schools in Oklahoma, following the tragic death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict, a non-binary high school student who passed away after being involved in a fight last month. The investigation comes after allegations of gender-based harassment that may have contributed to Benedict’s death.

Benedict, who identified as non-binary and used the pronouns they/them, was reportedly bullied at Owasso High School before the incident took place in the school’s girls’ bathroom. The cause of death has not been released by police, who have stated that Benedict did not die as a result of injuries sustained during the brawl on February 8.

In response to a letter from the Human Rights Campaign, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights stated that they will be looking into whether the district failed to adequately respond to the alleged harassment. Owasso Public Schools have denied the allegations, calling them baseless and without merit, but have confirmed their cooperation with federal officials during the investigation.

The family of Benedict has expressed their appreciation for the swift response from the Department of Education, with Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, emphasising the need for justice to be served for Nex and all students at Owasso High School. The family has highlighted the importance of protecting students from bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

Benedict’s mother, Sue Benedict, has spoken out about the injuries sustained by the teenager during the altercation, stating that there were bruises all over his face and eyes following the fight between a transgender student and three older girls. The school district has confirmed that the incident was quickly broken up by other students and a staff member, with the students involved only being in the bathroom for less than two minutes.
