Assam Police Officer Allegedly Commits Suicide After Shooting Woman in Dibrugarh District

An on-duty Assam police officer reportedly took his own life after shooting himself with his service revolver on Saturday. The tragic incident occurred after the officer fired upon a woman in the Lahowal area of Dibrugarh district in Assam.

The deceased cop, identified as Anupam Gowala, was the officer-in-charge of Namrup police station and hailed from Jorhat district. The victim, Bishnupriya Lahon Gogoi, was rushed to a nearby hospital after sustaining severe injuries from the bullet fired by Gowala.

Bipul Gogoi, the victim’s husband and an eyewitness to the incident, revealed that Gowala forcibly entered their house and demanded that Bishnupriya accompany him. When Bipul tried to intervene, Gowala allegedly threatened him with his gun, leading to a scuffle. Subsequently, the accused officer fired at Bishnupriya, causing critical injuries.

Bipul recounted that following the shooting, Gowala turned the gun on himself. Upon discovering the scene, Bipul promptly alerted the police, who arrived and recovered Gowala’s lifeless body. The authorities have initiated a post-mortem examination on the deceased officer.
