Tragic Fire Accident Claims the Life of Journalist Abhishruti Shashtri in Dhaka

On Thursday, the 29th of February, a devastating fire broke out in a commercial building on Bailey Road in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. The fire took the life of 25-year-old journalist Abhishruti Shashtri, who was working with ‘TheReport.live’ at the time of the incident.

Identification and Controversy

The following morning, on the 1st of March, colleagues of Abhishruti Shashtri positively identified her body at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit. However, the situation took a surprising turn when the alleged father of Shashtri, Shahburul Alam Sabuj, arrived at the Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute to claim her body.

Conflicting Identities

Shahburul Alam Sabuj claimed that the deceased journalist was not Hindu as believed but a Muslim named ‘Brishti Khatun’. This claim contradicted the known identity of Shashtri, who had always identified as a Hindu according to her friends and colleagues. The hospital authorities conducted checks on her voter identity card and fingerprints, which were registered under the name ‘Brishti Khatun’ in the government database.

Awaiting DNA Test

As a result of the controversy surrounding the identity of the victim, the hospital decided to retain the body pending a DNA test. This decision has caused a delay in the final handover of Abhishruti Shashtri’s remains to her family for proper rites and rituals.

A Father’s Grief

Expressing his profound sorrow, Sabuj shared, “I had so many hopes and dreams for my daughter. She always reassured me that she would make me proud and be a good human being. I am devastated by this loss, and all my aspirations for her have come to an abrupt end.”

“My daughter was independent and determined. She never wanted to burden me with her financial needs. Now, I am left with nothing but memories and an overwhelming sense of loss. I used to underestimate the potential of village girls, but my daughter proved me wrong. Now, all I have left is to carry her legacy forward,” he added.

The tragic loss of Abhishruti Shashtri has not only shaken her family and colleagues but has also sparked a debate over identity, highlighting the complexities of personal narratives and official records in the wake of such a devastating incident.
