The Laken Riley Funeral: Augusta University Nursing Student Murdered on UGA Campus

The funeral for Laken Riley, the Augusta University nursing student who was tragically murdered last week on the University of Georgia campus, is set to take place today in her hometown of Woodstock. The 22-year-old will be laid to rest after a 2 o’clock service at Woodstock City Church.

Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan who is in the US illegally, has been charged in the beating death of Riley and is currently being held without bond in the Athens-Clarke County jail.

According to Poole Funeral Home in Woodstock, visitation for Riley will be held at Woodstock City Church from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The funeral service, officiated by Pastor Samer Massad, will follow at 2 p.m.

Riley was found dead after going for a jog on the university’s intramural fields and never returning. Police discovered her unconscious and injured in a wooded area behind the fields around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

During a press conference, Chief Jeff Clark identified Jose Antonio Ibarra as the suspect in Riley’s murder. Riley, a nursing student at Augusta University, had previously attended UGA before transferring to AU.

Friends of Riley described her as a devoted member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority with an infectious smile and a passion for serving the Lord. Her obituary highlighted her involvement in mission trips and her love for spreading God’s word.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Laken’s GoFundMe account, with all proceeds going towards the establishment of the Laken Hope Riley Foundation, dedicated to promoting homicide awareness and safety for women.

As the community mourns the loss of Laken Riley, her legacy will live on through the foundation established in her honor.
