Man Charged Over Sydney CBD Shooting Allegedly Armed with Handgun and Semi-Automatic Rifle

A 79-year-old man has been charged over a shooting at a Sydney CBD law firm, where he was allegedly armed with both a small handgun and a sawn-off semi-automatic rifle, according to court documents.

The incident occurred on the ninth floor of a Castlereagh Street building, where lawyer Van Cooney, 77, was shot in the groin just before 1pm. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The alleged gunman, identified as Sinve Vulic, was restrained by workers at the scene before police arrived. He was subsequently arrested and charged with a number of firearm-related offences.

Mr Vulic did not appear in person or on screen during the initial court appearance at Downing Centre Local Court. His charges include shooting with intent to murder, possessing a loaded firearm, endangering life, and possessing unauthorised prohibited firearms.

According to court documents, the firearms involved in the incident were a small .22 calibre handgun and an M1 carbine, a semi-automatic rifle with the shoulder butt removed.

Mr Vulic’s lawyer, Ken Buckman, requested medical assistance for his client while in custody. The magistrate assured that all inmates on remand receive proper screening and care.

No pleas have been entered yet, and the case is set to return to court in early May for further proceedings.

Police are still investigating the relationship between the alleged gunman and the victim, and they have stated that the incident is not being treated as gang-related.

A witness who works in the building where the shooting took place described the accused man as “very calm” upon entering the premises, adding that the sudden violence was shocking to everyone present.

This development has raised concerns within the community, highlighting the importance of gun control and safety measures in public spaces.
