Details of the Incident

The events transpired on February 22, when Martin County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Barr spotted a black BMW sedan and a black Nissan Titan on the U.S. Hwy 64 Expressway. Both vehicles matched descriptions of stolen cars, prompting Barr to follow them and request backup.

As Barr attempted to pull over the vehicles, they accelerated, kickstarting a high-speed chase that took law enforcement officers through Martin County and into Edgecombe County. The pursuit involved multiple agencies, including the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Williamston Police Department, and the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office.

Suspects identified

The individuals behind the wheel of the stolen vehicles were identified as Steven James Adams and Shannon Elizabeth Jackson. At one point during the chase, Jackson switched from the BMW to the Nissan Titan, further complicating the situation.

Ultimately, the Nissan Titan ended up driving into a field in Edgecombe County, crashing into a canal. Both Adams and Jackson fled the scene on foot, prompting Barr to initiate a foot pursuit. With the assistance of K9 Draco, Adams was located and apprehended. However, during the arrest, Adams reportedly assaulted K9 Draco, causing a severe injury to the dog’s right eye.
