89-Year-Old Man Held Without Bond in Connection with Wife’s Smothering Death

An 89-year-old man from Dade City, located in Hernando County, is currently being held without bond following his arrest in connection with the tragic smothering death of his elderly wife.

The incident, which took place on January 18, sent shockwaves through the local community. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) received a distressing call from family members reporting the death of 87-year-old Marlys Elaine Duhrkopf at their residence on the 3900 block of Basinger Street.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies were informed that the husband of the deceased, 89-year-old Robert Carl Duhrkopf, had made incriminating statements suggesting his involvement in the death of his wife of 71 years. Subsequently, Duhrkopf admitted to investigators that he had smothered his wife until she ceased to breathe.

Following the arrest of Robert Duhrkopf, the couple’s daughter, Jacqui Hallock of Dade City, chose not to provide any comments on the distressing incident concerning her parents.

Denise Moloney, the Public Relations Manager at HCSO, confirmed that after consulting with the State’s Attorney’s Office, Duhrkopf was charged with one count of Aggravated Manslaughter of an Elderly Person.
