Volusia County Man Arrested for Firing Gun at Construction Crew from Airboat

Volusia County deputies have apprehended the individual responsible for shooting at a construction crew from an airboat as he passed by them. The incident took place on Saturday just after 5 p.m. at the State Road 46 bridge over the St. John’s River near C.S. Lee Park in Geneva.

The victims, who were part of a construction crew carrying out underwater repairs under the bridge, recounted to deputies that a man on an airboat engaged in a verbal altercation with them as he drove by. The suspect, identified as 69-year-old Richard Macko of Mims, reportedly made several reckless passes by the crew before yelling at them and brandishing a handgun.

Deputies stated that Macko pointed the gun at the construction crew and fired a single round in their direction before leaving the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the incident, but the construction crew expressed their intention to halt work on the bridge until the perpetrator was apprehended.

Following an investigation, deputies arrested Macko in Titusville on a Volusia Sheriff’s Office warrant charging him with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently held in the Brevard County jail without bond, awaiting an initial court appearance.
