SISSONVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A West Virginia deputy is currently recovering in the hospital after being shot during a pursuit in the quiet town of Sissonville.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), the incident took place on Thursday, February 29, 2023, around 1:11 a.m. when Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies were involved in a pursuit on Walker Drive in Sissonville.

The suspect vehicle turned from Walker Drive onto Applehill Lane and came to a stop at the end of the road, where the confrontation unfolded.

Intense Confrontation

Upon stopping, a male occupant of the vehicle opened fire on the deputy as he was getting out of his patrol car, resulting in the deputy being struck by a gunshot. Despite being injured, the deputy managed to return fire and call for backup.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Charleston Police, South Charleston Police, Nitro Police, and Saint Albans Police, quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.

Suspect Apprehended

The male suspect, identified as Nathan Oxley, 43, from Sissonville, was eventually apprehended after refusing to surrender to authorities. Non-lethal force was used to gain compliance and safely take Oxley into custody without further incident.

Oxley, who did not sustain any injuries from the return shots fired by the deputy, is currently receiving medical treatment for his involvement in the incident.

Search for Female Suspect

A female passenger of the vehicle, identified as Rebecca Linville, remains at large in the area. Deputies have deployed K-9 units to search for Linville, who is described as approximately 5’3” tall, 110 lbs., with blonde/red hair, and wearing gray legging-style pants with a blue shirt.

While authorities do not believe Linville poses a threat to the public, they advise residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings to law enforcement.

Deputy’s Condition

The injured Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputy was swiftly transported to CAMC General Hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound. He is currently in stable condition and is scheduled for surgery the following day.

Authorities believe the pursuit was initiated after the deputy recognized the suspect vehicle from an active disturbance call involving Mr. Oxley on Galena Lane in Sissonville. The caller reported that Oxley was behaving violently and may have been under the influence of methamphetamine.

Mr. Oxley is expected to face multiple charges, including attempted murder of a police officer and malicious wounding, as the investigation into the incident continues.
