Early in the morning, tragedy struck near Lalbaug in Mumbai as a speeding car rammed into two senior citizens during their routine morning walk. The incident took place on Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, a bustling area known for its morning walkers and joggers.

The Morning Walk Routine Turned Fatal

Vitthal Kadam, aged 66, and his companion Pandurang Matare had been following their daily morning walk routine at Shahid Bhagat Singh Maidan in Kalachowki. As the two friends were walking along the road towards Parel, a Swift Dzire coming from Parel towards Byculla lost control and struck them with great force. The impact was so severe that both Kadam and Matare sustained serious injuries. Kadam, upon regaining consciousness, found Matare lying unconscious a short distance away, while the car had collided with two other vehicles.

Rapid Response and Fatal Outcome

Bystanders immediately alerted the Kalachowki police, who swiftly arrived at the scene. Matare was rushed to KEM Hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Matare succumbed to his injuries later that day. The police noted that Matare had suffered a deep head injury in the accident.

Driver Apprehended and Confession

The driver of the Swift Dzire, identified as Santosh Kashinath Shedkar, was arrested following the incident. Shedkar, a local resident who had recently returned from a trip, confessed to losing control of his vehicle due to fatigue. He appeared in court and has been remanded in judicial custody. Shedkar, who runs a business making nameplates, admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, leading to the tragic accident.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of negligence behind the wheel. As the community mourns the loss of a beloved senior citizen, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident to ensure justice is served.
