A man from Falls of Rough has been apprehended for unlawfully entering the Leitchfield Animal Shelter and setting loose a number of dogs.

K105 reported on Tuesday that the Leitchfield Police Department responded to the break-in on Tuesday morning around 7:30 am, and found that 16 dogs had been set free from their kennels. Tragically, one dog was discovered deceased, while three others sustained minor injuries and were cared for at the animal shelter. A dog with serious injuries received treatment from veterinary services, according to LPD Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow.

The exact cause of death for the deceased dog has not been determined, but surveillance footage shows several dogs engaging in a fight which may have resulted in the fatality.

One dog is still missing and was last spotted at Southgate Mall on Tuesday in the company of the suspect.

“The suspect was later seen that evening without the dog,” Renfrow mentioned.

While examining surveillance footage, police found that “a male individual entered the premises by bypassing a locked gate,” Renfrow stated.

The man was identified as 43-year-old Michael Baker from Falls of Rough.

Baker, as per police reports, “entered a section with dog kennels and multiple dogs were observed fleeing from the area. Baker was then seen leaving the kennel area and wandering around the parking lot in an attempt to capture a specific white dog, which he eventually caught and left the premises with … Baker was also seen rearranging items on the property.”

LPD secured a warrant for Baker, who was taken into custody by officers and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office at his residence. He has been charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree cruelty to animals, acquiring control over an animal, acquiring control over an animal facility, damage to an animal in an animal facility, and third-degree trespassing.

He has been incarcerated at the Grayson County Detention Center.
