A man from Falls of Rough has been taken into custody for unlawfully entering the Leitchfield Animal Shelter and releasing numerous dogs from their enclosures.

According to a report by K105, the Leitchfield Police Department was alerted to the break-in early Tuesday morning around 7:30 am. Upon arriving at the scene, it was discovered that 16 dogs had been set free from their kennels. Tragically, one dog was found deceased, while three others sustained minor injuries and were promptly treated at the animal shelter. Another dog was severely injured and required medical attention from veterinary services, as stated by LPD Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow.

The cause of the deceased dog’s passing has not yet been determined, but surveillance footage indicates that a scuffle between several dogs may have resulted in the unfortunate outcome.

As of now, one dog is still missing and was last spotted at Southgate Mall in the company of the suspect.

“The individual was later observed without the dog that evening,” Renfrow disclosed.

Upon reviewing the surveillance tapes, authorities identified the male intruder as 43-year-old Michael Baker from Falls of Rough.

Baker allegedly gained access to the dog kennels and allowed multiple dogs to escape. He was then seen trying to capture a specific white dog on the premises before leaving with it. Additionally, Baker was observed rearranging items on the property.

An arrest warrant was issued for Baker, leading to his apprehension by officers from the Leitchfield Police Department and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office at his residence. He has been charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree cruelty to animals, acquiring control over an animal, acquiring control over an animal facility, damage to an animal in an animal facility, and third-degree trespassing.

He is currently being held at the Grayson County Detention Center.
