Long Beach Woman Identified After 24 Years

After more than two decades of mystery, forensic researchers have finally identified a woman whose skeletal remains were found in Ventura County back in January 2000. The woman has been identified as Linda Laverne Orndorff Charlesworth Burka, a former resident of Long Beach.

The discovery of the woman’s remains was made by a surveyor working on Grimes Canyon Road in Fillmore. At the time, authorities estimated that the woman had died between two to five years prior to the discovery of her remains. An autopsy conducted at the time did not reveal the cause of death, and there was no obvious trauma found on the body.

Despite efforts to identify the woman using traditional forensic DNA testing, no matches were found, and she was classified as a Jane Doe. However, in June 2023, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit teamed up with Othram Labs, a forensic research lab, to conduct advanced DNA testing on the remains.

Othram Labs was able to extract DNA from the skeleton and build a comprehensive profile, which led investigators to potential relatives of the woman. Through this new information, the woman was finally identified as Linda Laverne Orndorff Charlesworth Burka, born on September 25, 1947.
