Safety Concerns on Massachusetts Roadways

The safety of motorists on Massachusetts roadways has become a major cause for concern, with the state highway administrator describing the situation as being “at a crisis level.” The Department of Transportation has taken steps to address the issue and improve overall safety on local roads.
Increasing Number of Motor Vehicle Crashes
According to MassDOT’s crash data portal, there were 134,233 motor vehicle crashes in Massachusetts last year. This number is up from 132,659 crashes in 2022 and 124,734 crashes in 2021. Although the figures are below levels seen before the pandemic, they still indicate a worrying trend.

The data also shows an increase in fatal crashes since the pre-pandemic era. In 2022, there were 409 fatal crashes reported, the highest number since 2005. However, this number decreased to 325 in 2023. So far in 2024, there have been 15,948 crashes reported, including 40 fatalities.
Efforts to Improve Roadway Safety
Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver highlighted the implementation of a wrong-way driver deterrence pilot that has been successful in preventing dangerous situations. The pilot involves installing systems on 16 highway on/off ramps to detect drivers heading in the wrong direction and alert them.
Gulliver emphasized the importance of signage and bright lights to alert drivers of their mistake. The aim is to prevent wrong-way drivers from causing deadly accidents, especially at night when visibility is reduced.
Legislative Measures for Road Safety
MassDOT has been working to implement a roadway safety law passed by the Legislature in late 2022. The law includes new requirements to protect pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users from the dangers posed by motor vehicles.
One key requirement is that drivers must leave at least four feet of distance when passing vulnerable road users. Additionally, there have been changes to school zone regulations to improve safety for students.
