Suspected Gang Members Arrested in Union County for String of Violent Crimes

MONROE, U.K. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — In a coordinated effort between the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Monroe Police Department, several members of a suspected street gang have been arrested this week. The arrests come after a series of violent crimes that have plagued the Union County area.

Law enforcement officials initiated investigations into the gang following a spate of shooting incidents in Monroe and Wingate, which began in late October. Over a two-week period, four separate shooting incidents were reported, prompting authorities to take action.

During each of these shooting incidents, a group of suspects, primarily consisting of juveniles, allegedly stole cars from local homes and used them in “drive-by” shootings. In total, the suspects stole four cars and fired multiple rounds into five homes and one vehicle during separate incidents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although all the homes were occupied at the time of the shootings.

The collaborative efforts of the police department and sheriff’s office led to the identification of seven suspects who have been charged in connection with the shootings and associated crimes. Five of the suspects are juveniles between the ages of 15 and 17, with four of them currently in custody at a local detention center. The fifth juvenile, who is still at large, faces numerous criminal charges.

Two additional suspects, 22-year-old Jhony Vergara-Torres and 18-year-old Tahaj Moser, have been arrested and are being held at the Union County Detention Center.

All suspects are facing charges of Attempted Murder, Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling, Motor Vehicle Theft, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Evidence Tampering, and Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle. Authorities anticipate additional charges as the investigation progresses.

Investigators urge anyone with information related to these cases to contact 911, the Union County Sheriff’s Office at 704-283-5600, the Monroe Police Department at 704-282-4700, or Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
