Tragic Racing Crash in Las Vegas Claims Life of Young Woman

In a devastating turn of events, a racing-related crash in Las Vegas has resulted in the loss of a young woman’s life. The incident, which took place in the early hours of February 21 on East Silverado Ranch Boulevard near Bermuda Road, involved two vehicles – an orange 2022 Chevrolet Camaro and a maroon 2023 Mazda MX5.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the two cars were travelling eastbound on East Silverado Ranch Boulevard at a dangerously high speed when they collided. The impact caused both vehicles to spin in opposite directions, with the Camaro crashing into a retaining wall and the Mazda colliding with a light pole and tree.

Tragically, the passenger of the Mazda, identified as 24-year-old Jessica Dettlaff, was unable to escape the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mazda, 26-year-old Melissa Dettlaff, sustained injuries and was transported to Sunrise Hospital for treatment.

Details of the Crash

Eyewitnesses reported that the two vehicles appeared to be racing or engaging in reckless driving behaviour as they sped down the road. The highest reported speed of the Camaro was above 90 miles per hour, while the Mazda was travelling at speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour.

Both drivers, Jonathan Gallagher and Melissa Dettlaff, admitted to police that they had been at a local bar, Distill Bar, before the collision. An employee at the bar confirmed their presence before the fatal crash occurred.

Legal Ramifications

Jonathan Gallagher, the driver of the Camaro, and Melissa Dettlaff are facing charges of reckless driving resulting in death or bodily harm, as well as participating in a speed contest. Additionally, Melissa Dettlaff could potentially face DUI charges pending the analysis of blood samples taken after the crash.

Gallagher posted bail the day after the crash and is scheduled to appear in court on March 27. Melissa Dettlaff was also released on bail but is under electronic monitoring and has been prohibited from driving. She is due to appear in court on March 26.
