The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department swiftly responded to the scene of the harrowing incident, which took place in the early hours of February 21 on East Silverado Ranch Boulevard near Bermuda Road.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officials determined that an orange 2022 Chevrolet Camaro and a maroon 2023 Mazda MX5 were both hurtling down East Silverado Ranch Boulevard at an alarmingly high speed. The two vehicles ultimately collided, sending them spinning in opposite directions – the Chevrolet crashing into a retaining wall, and the Mazda careening into a light pole and tree.

Tragically, the passenger of the Mazda, identified as 24-year-old Jessica Dettlaff, was unable to extricate herself from the vehicle and was found unresponsive with severe head injuries. The situation was made even more poignant by the fact that the driver of the Mazda, 26-year-old Melissa Dettlaff, revealed to police that Jessica was her own sister, who tragically lost her life in the crash.

The driver of the Camaro, 24-year-old Jonathan Gallagher, was found to be alone in his vehicle and sustained only minor injuries. Despite passing a sobriety test, Gallagher was taken to University Medical Center for treatment.

Melissa Dettlaff, however, was transported to Sunrise Hospital for injuries she sustained in the collision. During the course of her medical treatment, an officer detected the scent of alcohol on her person, prompting further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Due to medical constraints, Melissa Dettlaff was unable to complete a sobriety test at the scene, and blood samples were subsequently taken for analysis. The results of these tests are still pending, but both Melissa Dettlaff and Gallagher admitted to authorities that they had been at Distill Bar prior to the tragic events of that fateful night.

A thorough investigation at the crash site revealed that the Camaro had reached speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour, while the Mazda had been travelling at over 80 miles per hour.

Both Gallagher and Melissa Dettlaff now face serious charges, including reckless driving resulting in death or bodily harm and participating in a “speed contest.” Melissa Dettlaff could potentially also be charged with DUI resulting in death, pending the outcome of the blood sample analysis.

Gallagher posted bail the day after the crash and is scheduled to appear in court on March 27. Melissa Dettlaff, on the other hand, was released from custody on electronic monitoring and is prohibited from driving. She is due to appear in court on March 26 to face the consequences of her actions.

The tragic loss of Jessica Dettlaff serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating impact it can have on families and communities. This heartbreaking incident should serve as a cautionary tale for all motorists to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads..
