Tragic Racing Incident in Las Vegas Claims Life of Young Woman
LAS VEGAS (FOX5/Gray News) – A devastating racing-related crash in Las Vegas has left a community in mourning after claiming the life of a young woman. The incident, which occurred on Feb. 21 on East Silverado Ranch Boulevard near Bermuda Road, involved two vehicles – an orange 2022 Chevrolet Camaro and a maroon 2023 Mazda MX5 – travelling at high speeds.
The collision resulted in both cars spinning out of control, with the Camaro striking a retaining wall and the Mazda crashing into a light pole and tree. Tragically, the passenger of the Mazda, identified as 24-year-old Jessica Dettlaff, was unable to escape the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Camaro, 24-year-old Jonathan Gallagher, sustained minor injuries and was taken to University Medical Center for treatment. Melissa Dettlaff, the driver of the Mazda and Jessica’s sister, was also injured in the crash and was transported to Sunrise Hospital for medical attention.
During the investigation, it was revealed that both Gallagher and Melissa Dettlaff had been at Distill Bar before the collision. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicles racing or “messing around” in the vicinity of South Point Casino prior to the crash.

Both drivers are now facing charges related to the crash, including reckless driving resulting in death or bodily harm and participating in a speed contest. Melissa Dettlaff may also face DUI charges pending the results of the blood tests.
Gallagher and Melissa Dettlaff have both posted bail and are awaiting their court appearances. Gallagher is scheduled to appear in court on March 27, while Melissa Dettlaff’s court date is set for March 26. Melissa Dettlaff has been released on electronic monitoring and has been prohibited from driving.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals and their families. Our thoughts are with the Dettlaff family during this difficult time.
