The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department swiftly responded to the scene of the crash, which occurred at 1:41 a.m. on East Silverado Ranch Boulevard near Bermuda Road. Initial investigations revealed that an orange 2022 Chevrolet Camaro and a maroon 2023 Mazda MX5 were speeding eastbound on East Silverado Ranch Boulevard when they collided, sending both vehicles careening in opposite directions. The aftermath saw the Chevrolet crashing into a retaining wall, while the Mazda collided with a light pole and tree, as reported by the police.

Tragically, one of the passengers in the Mazda, identified as 24-year-old Jessica Dettlaff, was unable to escape the vehicle and was found unresponsive at the scene. Witnesses recounted that she appeared to be bleeding from the head, painting a grim picture of the severity of the crash.

Further investigations revealed that the drivers of the vehicles were 24-year-old Jonathan Gallagher, who was alone in the Camaro, and 26-year-old Melissa Dettlaff, who was driving the Mazda. Melissa Dettlaff confirmed to authorities that Jessica Dettlaff was her sister, further deepening the emotional impact of the incident.

Both Gallagher and Melissa Dettlaff were taken to separate medical facilities for treatment of their injuries. Gallagher, who passed a sobriety test, was treated for minor injuries at University Medical Center. Melissa Dettlaff, however, was taken to Sunrise Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. During a medical assessment, officers detected the smell of alcohol on Melissa Dettlaff, prompting further investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Subsequent tests to determine the blood alcohol levels of Melissa Dettlaff are still pending, as police seek to establish whether alcohol played a role in the tragic events of that fateful night. Both Melissa Dettlaff and Gallagher admitted to police that they had been at Distill Bar prior to the crash, with an employee at the bar confirming their presence.

The investigation at the scene of the crime revealed that the vehicles were travelling at dangerously high speeds, with the Camaro reportedly exceeding 90 miles per hour and the Mazda over 80 miles per hour. These findings have led to both Gallagher and Melissa Dettlaff facing charges of reckless driving resulting in death or bodily harm, as well as participating in a “speed contest.”

Gallagher, who posted bail on Feb. 22, is scheduled to appear in court on March 27. Melissa Dettlaff, who was released from custody on electronic monitoring, is due back in court on March 26. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, the repercussions of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices..
