The man was fined Rs 5,000 and given a community order to attend a six-month drug rehabilitation programme.

In a bizarre turn of events, a man attempted to rob a post office in Nottingham, England using a long metal spoon. The man, identified as Jelanie Scott, tried to steal cash from the Hyson Green Post Office by reaching for the money with the unusual tool. However, his actions were quickly detected by a vigilant staff member who activated the panic alarm, triggering a security smoke system that filled the room with smoke. Amidst the chaos, Scott managed to flee the scene. At the time of the incident, Scott was using crutches. The attempted robbery took place at 11.45 am on Saturday, February 10.

The Nottinghamshire Police revealed that they were able to identify Scott as he dropped his debit card at the scene before making a getaway in a taxi. After reviewing CCTV footage, the police arrested Scott nine days later when he was spotted by patrolling officers in Forest Road West, Radford.

During questioning, Scott admitted to struggling with mental health issues and consuming cocaine and heroin before the incident, which clouded his judgment. The 36-year-old was charged with attempted burglary and appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on February 21, where he pleaded guilty.

According to the police, Scott was handed a community order to participate in a six-month drug rehabilitation programme. In addition, he was fined £50 (approximately Rs 5,000) and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £114 (approximately Rs 12,000) along with £85 (approximately Rs 9,000) in court costs.

On February 27, the Nottinghamshire Police shared the CCTV footage of the incident on Instagram, sparking a flurry of reactions from users on the platform.

Commenting on the post, one Instagram user commended the authorities for their swift action, while another expressed disbelief at the leniency of the sentence. The general sentiment echoed a frustration with the perceived leniency in the justice system.

Sergeant Mark Southgate of the City Central neighbourhood policing team stated, “There was overwhelming evidence in this case, and I am pleased Scott has been held accountable for his actions. He acknowledged that it was a foolish decision, and I hope he takes this opportunity to reflect on his behavior and avoid further trouble.”
