Marines Charged with Racist Graffiti at University of Maryland

Two United States Marines are facing charges related to racist graffiti discovered in a dormitory at the University of Maryland, College Park. The incident occurred last year and has led to misdemeanor offenses being filed against the individuals involved.

The accused Marine, Lance Cpl. Hayden Drew Pritchard, aged 22, is charged with a misdemeanor hate crime offense along with trespassing. His accomplice, Lance Cpl. Sergio Delgado, aged 21, is facing charges of trespassing. The charges stem from an investigation conducted jointly by the university’s police department and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

The incident took place on April 29, 2023, when campus police received reports of racial epithets being written in various locations within La Plata Hall. Surveillance footage revealed Pritchard and Delgado entering the building in the early hours of the morning. They were seen leaving shortly after, with one of them discarding a marker before leaving in an Uber that was traced back to the U.S. Marine Barracks in Washington.

During interviews with investigators, both Marines admitted to entering the building without a valid reason. Pritchard expressed some uncertainty but acknowledged the possibility of his involvement in writing the racial slurs. Neither of the accused individuals had legal representation listed in court records at the time.

Both Pritchard and Delgado enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2022 and underwent training at various military facilities before reporting to the barracks in Washington in December 2022. They are scheduled to appear in Prince George’s County District Court in Hyattsville at the end of March.

The Marine Barracks in Washington released a statement expressing disappointment in the conduct of the individuals involved. They stated that the charges against Pritchard and Delgado are not in line with the high standards expected of Marine Corps members. The statement also emphasized that accountability will be enforced if the charges are substantiated.
