The Tragic North Lubbock Shooting Incident
A 27-year-old man, Abel Rosales Jr., was sentenced to 22 years in prison after admitting to a fatal shooting that occurred in North Lubbock more than five years ago. The incident took place on September 12, 2018, when Gabriel Rodriguez was fatally shot.

Details of the Incident
Abel Rosales Jr. appeared before District Judge Douglas Freitag and pleaded guilty to a count of murder in the slaying of Gabriel Rodriguez. Murder carries a punishment of five years to life in prison, but Rosales agreed to a 22-year prison sentence as part of a deal with the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office.
Rosales, who has been held at the Lubbock County Detention Center since his arrest on September 14, 2018, will have to serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Legal Proceedings
In exchange for his guilty plea, a charge of aggravated assault against Rosales was dismissed. He was one of two individuals arrested on a murder charge in connection with the case. His father, Abel Rosales Sr., aged 55, is currently awaiting trial and held at the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
The Incident and Police Response
The incident began around 7:15 p.m. when Lubbock police responded to a shots fired call at a residence in the 2800 block of Baylor Street. Gabriel Rodriguez was found with a gunshot wound to the chest, and his brother, Elias Rodriguez, reported being struck with a steel handle from a floor jack.

Elias Rodriguez recounted that two men entered their home, with Abel Rosales Jr. demanding to know who had fought his father the day before. When Gabriel stood up, Rosales Jr. shot him in the chest. Elias managed to take cover as Rosales Jr. attempted to shoot him, but the gun malfunctioned. The other man, identified as Abel Rosales Sr., then beat Elias with the steel jack handle before both intruders fled the scene.
Gabriel Rodriguez was rushed to University Medical Center but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Arrest and Detention
Abel Rosales Jr. was arrested at a residence in the 3200 block of East Broadway, while Rosales Sr. was found at a home in the 3200 block of Cornell Street. Both men were booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center, where they remain on $500,000 bonds each.
