The latest count from sources reveals the extent of the issue:
– Fairhope East Elementary: 721 students absent
– J. Larry Newton: 136 students absent
– Fairhope Middle School: 170 students absent
– Fairhope High School: 204 students absent
In total, 1,231 students are absent from various Fairhope schools due to illness or precautionary measures. Additionally, 974 students from Fairhope West Elementary School are not in attendance while a professional service conducts a deep cleaning of the campus.
The Alabama Department of Public Health is currently investigating the sickness to determine the cause. Although it has not been officially identified as the norovirus, Baldwin County school officials are treating it as such. Symptoms of the illness include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and nausea.
The American Medical Association lists symptoms of the norovirus as nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, as well as fever, headache, and body aches. The ADPH has reported that no individuals have been hospitalized due to these illnesses, but the concern among students and families remains high.

As the situation unfolds, health officials from the Mobile County Health Department have provided five tips to help protect individuals from contracting the norovirus:
1. Frequent hand-washing: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet or changing diapers, and before eating or preparing food.
2. Wash your food: Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables, and cook shellfish to an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Clean surfaces: Disinfect surfaces, especially after vomiting or diarrhea incidents, using a chlorine bleach solution or an EPA-registered product against norovirus.
4. Avoid preparing food or taking care of others when sick: Refrain from preparing food for others or providing care while sick and for at least two days after symptoms cease.
5. Do your laundry: Wash contaminated laundry in hot water and dry on the highest heat setting.
