Man Arrested for Bomb Threat at Aims Community College in Greeley

A man who made a bomb threat at Aims Community College in Greeley has been arrested after sending threatening messages to a Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old David Gildea, made the threat over text messages, prompting law enforcement to take action.

The incident occurred on February 13, when Gildea called dispatch to report a bomb threat at the Aims campus. Despite claiming he needed to leave and that he wouldn’t detonate the bomb, the sheriff’s office took immediate action to evacuate students and staff from the area and conducted thorough searches of the buildings.

During the evacuation process, a deputy attempted to contact the individual who made the threat. After failing to reach the person via phone call, the deputy resorted to texting the number. Gildea, who identified himself as David, engaged in a conversation with the deputy but refused to provide his last name.

As the conversation progressed, Gildea started making threats towards the deputy, eventually stating that he would “meet him with a hollow point.” Despite the deputy never revealing his law enforcement status, Gildea believed he was communicating with a police officer.

Following the threats, a warrant was obtained to track Gildea’s location through his phone. Law enforcement traced the phone to an address on Weld County Road 17 outside Brighton, where Gildea was located in the basement of the property.

Upon police arrival, Gildea attempted to evade arrest by running into the basement and refusing to surrender. Officers had to pursue him down the stairs before taking him into custody.

During the arrest, Gildea’s phone rang in his pocket, confirming his involvement in the bomb threat. He admitted to making the call, citing that he was not in the right state of mind at the time. Gildea was subsequently booked into the Weld County Jail, where he remains pending a court hearing.

Records show that Gildea has a criminal history dating back to 2005, including multiple fugitive of justice charges. He is scheduled for a disposition hearing on March 8 in Weld District Court.
