Missing Election Monitoring Officer Found Alive in Mimika Forest

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) – The Mimika District Police in Central Papua have confirmed that the election monitoring officer who was reported missing since February 11, 2024, has been found alive in the Mimika forest on Wednesday, February 28.

The missing officer, identified as Daud Kudiai, was last seen abruptly leaving a pre-election meeting with local officials and heading towards the jungle on February 11. Mimika Police Chief, Adjunct Senior Commissioner I Gede Putra, stated that the search team found Kudiai 500 metres away from where he was last seen.

The joint search team, consisting of military and police officers, Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) officers, and SAR officers, located the missing officer wandering the forest without clothes. Putra mentioned that Kudiai had lacerations on some parts of his body.

Health Condition

After being found, Kudiai was immediately taken to the Potowai Buru Public Health Centre for health checks. Putra revealed that the victim was in a frail health condition with anaemia, hyperthermia, a body temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, blood pressure of 127/89 mmHg, and a heart rate of 139 beats per minute.

“The victim will be transported to Timika for further health assessments,” Putra added.

Search Operation

On Tuesday, February 27, Rahmat Bagja, the chief of the General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), stated that the election recapitulation process is still ongoing in Mimika District, while the search operation for the missing officer continues.

Commissioner Herwyn J. H. Malonda mentioned that the district’s Bawaslu office had collaborated with local officials to locate the missing officer. The family of the missing official had also participated in the search operation from February 18-22, 2024, but with no success at that time.
