Tallahassee Man Arrested in Valdosta for Fatal Stabbing Incident

Valdosta Police have reported that a man was arrested on Thursday in Valdosta for fatally stabbing another man earlier that morning. The suspect, identified as John Paul Battle, 59, was apprehended after being found hiding in a utility shed in the 1800 block of Northside Drive.

Battle now faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, according to Valdosta Police.

The incident unfolded during the overnight hours on Thursday when officers, along with the Valdosta Fire Department and EMS, responded to a home in the 2000 block of LaSalle Drive after receiving a report about a woman’s boyfriend being unresponsive.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 49-year-old Collie Mathis with stab wounds to his torso. Despite immediate life-saving measures, Mathis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that Battle and Mathis were known to each other, and Battle was taken into custody without incident.

Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan expressed condolences to Mathis’ family, stating, “Our prayers and condolences go out to Mr. Mathis’ family.”
