Statesville Man Arrested on Drug Charges

33-year-old Charles Smith, Jr. of Statesville was taken into custody on Monday by officers from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. Smith faces multiple felony charges, including possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, and maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances. Additionally, he is charged with misdemeanours such as possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. Smith is also facing charges for driving with a revoked license, displaying a fake license plate, lacking liability insurance, and failing to have a working taillight on his motorcycle.

Details of the Arrest

On the day of his arrest, a deputy from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team observed a motorcycle travelling east on Salisbury Road without a functioning taillight. The female passenger on the motorcycle was also seen without a helmet. When the officer attempted to pull over the motorcycle, Smith allegedly made eye contact and sped away at a high speed.

After a brief chase, the deputy successfully stopped the motorcycle on Old Salisbury Road. Smith, the driver of the vehicle, was identified and found to have a suspended driver’s license. Furthermore, the registration plate displayed on the motorcycle was determined to be fictitious. A subsequent search of the motorcycle led to the discovery of 2.71 grams of cocaine, 1.28 grams of methamphetamine, and 3.28 grams of marijuana.

Court Proceedings

Following his arrest, Smith appeared in court on Tuesday where a judge set his bond at $100,000. As of today, he remains in custody awaiting his District Court hearing scheduled for March 18.
