In a recent announcement, the governing body of motorsport, the FIA, revealed that a groundbreaking document known as the Drivers’ Standards Guideline (DSG) will soon be introduced to provide a consistent reference point for drivers, race officials, and stewards worldwide. This initiative aims to support drivers as they progress in their careers and ensure fair and consistent decision-making on the track.
The FIA plans to release the DSG in 2025, following approval from the World Motor Sport Council. The guidelines will be integrated into Appendix L of the FIA’s International Sporting Code, setting a new standard for driving conduct in motorsport.
The development of the DSG has already commenced after consultations with the FIA’s Drivers’ Committee, which includes notable figures such as former World Rally champion Petter Solberg, ex-F1 drivers Karun Chandhok and Emanuele Pirro, and chaired by Ronan Morgan of the Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates.
The DSG will cover a wide range of topics, including driving standards, overtaking maneuvers, track limits, yellow flag procedures, and safety car restart protocols. It aims to promote consistency and fairness in decision-making, particularly in close racing situations.
Notably, the DSG will also play a role in training young drivers seeking their first international license, emphasizing the importance of clean and respectful racing behavior from the outset of their careers.
Foundation in F1 Best Practices
Autosport reports that the DSG will draw heavily from existing F1 best practice standards, commonly known as the ‘Driving Standards Guidelines’. These guidelines provide F1 drivers with a framework for assessing on-track actions and maintaining consistency in racing conduct.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has expressed his support for the DSG, highlighting the significance of promoting driving standards across all levels of motorsport. The two-time F1 champion emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting fellow competitors during on-track battles.
Support for Young Drivers
One of the primary objectives of the DSG is to assist young drivers as they progress through the ranks of motorsport. Currently, guidelines such as F1’s DSG are only distributed at the highest levels, making it crucial to establish consistent standards for aspiring racers.
The unveiling of the DSG took place during a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Geneva, where additional decisions were made regarding changes to F1’s sprint weekend format and technical regulations for the upcoming seasons.
