DeKalb County Police Officers Indicted in Fatal Shooting of Man in Stone Mountain Home
Two DeKalb County police officers, one current and one former, have been indicted in connection with the shooting death of a man inside his Stone Mountain home in 2022.

Indictment Details
Former DKPD Officer Russell Mathis, 30, was indicted by a DeKalb County Grand Jury on charges of felony Involuntary Manslaughter and misdemeanor Reckless Conduct. Current DKPD Officer Jordan Vance, also 30, was indicted on a charge of Reckless Conduct.
Incident Overview
The charges stem from the death of Marando Salmon, 37, inside his home in 2022. Prosecutors stated that Mathis and Vance responded to a call about a stolen car parked in the driveway of a home on Autumn Crest Court on Nov. 4, 2022. Upon entering the residence, Mathis encountered Salmon in a second-floor bedroom and fatally shot him, mistaking a cell phone for a knife.
Tragic Outcome
Despite being unarmed, Salmon was shot by Officer Mathis, who believed he posed a threat. A holstered gun was found in the bedroom, but Salmon succumbed to his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Legal Proceedings
Both Mathis and Vance are expected to surrender to the DeKalb County jail in the coming days as they face the consequences of their actions.
