DeSoto County Sheriff’s K9 Luca Honored in Emotional Service

Hundreds of officers and their families gathered in Hernando to pay their respects to DeSoto County Sheriff’s K9 Luca in a poignant service held on Wednesday. The atmosphere was filled with solemnity as K9 handlers and their loyal canine companions lined the street outside Longview Point Baptist Church, awaiting the arrival of the procession.

K9 Luca tragically lost his life on February 21 after being shot following a car chase that ended in Lake Cormorant. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation reported that Luca was released during the chase, and the suspect, identified as Jamarcus Brown, fatally shot him. Deputies then fired at Brown, resulting in his death. The motive behind the chase remains undisclosed.

A Hero’s Journey

Prior to his service as a police dog, Luca, a 10-year-old canine, spent five years in Afghanistan with the 7th Special Forces Group. He was selected to join the group in August 2015 and served under three handlers during his time there. One of his handlers credited Luca with saving his life during a harrowing firefight in Afghanistan.

The handler, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, recounted a moment when Luca’s quick instincts pulled him to safety during a dangerous encounter with enemy forces. Luca’s bravery and loyalty were unwavering, showcasing the unique bond between a K9 and his handler.

A Lasting Legacy

After his deployment in Afghanistan, Luca was transferred to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department in December 2020, where he served until his untimely death. During his time with the department, Luca was deployed over 323 times for various operations, including explosive detection, SWAT missions, and suspect apprehension.

During Wednesday’s service, Sheriff Thomas Tuggle commended Luca for his unwavering loyalty, bravery, and dedication to duty. Luca’s handlers were presented with a Medal of Valor in recognition of their service alongside the courageous K9.

Final Farewell

Major Jonathan Poe delivered a touching eulogy for Luca, highlighting the K9’s final act of bravery that saved the lives of his fellow deputies. The community showed an outpouring of support for Luca and his handlers, reflecting on the impact of his selfless sacrifice.

Luca’s handler, Sgt. Nick Cook, expressed profound gratitude for his partnership with Luca, describing him as the ultimate companion in the line of duty. Cook’s heartfelt words captured the essence of Luca’s heroic spirit and the deep bond they shared.

Supporting the Cause

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department is encouraging those who wish to offer condolences to make donations to The American Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association on Venmo instead of sending flowers. This gesture honours Luca’s memory and supports the vital work of law enforcement K9 units across the country.
