Tragic Crash Claims Lives of Eight Farmworkers in Madera County, California

On a fateful morning in Madera County, California, a tragic head-on collision took the lives of eight farmworkers, leaving a community in mourning. The incident occurred on February 23rd on Avenue 7, west of Road 22, in a rural area of the county.

The Madera County Coroner’s Office has identified all eight victims involved in the crash, shedding light on the individuals who tragically lost their lives that day.

Victims of the Crash

The seven farmworkers who were in the van at the time of the collision were identified as:

  • 24-year-old Juvenal Jacobo Talavera from Michoacán, Mexico
  • 33-year-old Hector Orozco from Jalisco, Mexico
  • 30-year-old Alfredo Morales Sanchez from Guerrero, Mexico
  • 30-year-old Victor Hernandez Cirilo
  • 34-year-old Fidel Filomeno Ojeda
  • 35-year-old Pedro Hernandez Ojeda
  • 57-year-old Roberto Banuelos Flores

The driver of the pickup truck, who was the eighth victim, has been identified as 78-year-old Robert Jerry Kovar from Auberry, California.

Cause of the Crash

According to officers, the head-on collision occurred early in the morning as the van and pickup truck crashed into each other on the rural road. The eight farmworkers were on their way to work at Lion Farms when the tragic incident occurred, with only one individual surviving the crash.

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the crash, as the community comes together to mourn the loss of the eight lives taken too soon.
