K9 Luca Honored at Emotional Service by DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department

Hundreds of officers and their families gathered in Hernando on Wednesday to pay their respects to DeSoto County Sheriff’s K9 Luca in a moving service.

The solemn occasion was marked by occasional barking, breaking the near-complete silence as dozens of K9 handlers and their dogs lined the street outside Longview Point Baptist Church, waiting for the procession to arrive.

Luca tragically lost his life on February 21 after being shot following a car chase that ended in Lake Cormorant. The suspect, identified as Jamarcus Brown, shot Luca after being released by deputies. Deputies then fired at Brown, resulting in his death. The motive behind the chase remains unknown.

Prior to his service as a police dog, Luca spent five years in Afghanistan under the 7th Special Forces Group. He was selected to join in August 2015 and served under three handlers during this time. One of his handlers credited Luca with saving his life during a firefight in Afghanistan.

After his service in Afghanistan, Luca joined the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department in December 2020. During his tenure, he was deployed over 323 times for explosive detection, SWAT operations, and suspect location.

Sheriff Thomas Tuggle opened the service and presented Luca’s handlers with a Medal of Valor in recognition of their dedication and bravery. Major Jonathan Poe delivered a heartfelt eulogy, highlighting Luca’s final act of bravery that saved the lives of deputies.

During the service, a statement from Luca’s handler, Sgt. Nick Cook, was read, expressing the deep bond and trust between them. Cook praised Luca’s unwavering loyalty and bravery, stating that he was proud to have worked alongside such a courageous partner.

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department is encouraging those who wish to offer condolences to make a donation to The American Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association on Venmo in Luca’s memory.

As the community mourns the loss of a true hero, Luca’s legacy of courage and sacrifice will forever be remembered.
