Murder Investigation Unveiled in St. Petersburg Home

In a shocking turn of events, newly-released court documents have revealed that a woman found hanging inside the garage of a St. Petersburg home last week was the victim of a murder. The St. Petersburg Police Department conducted a search of the residence, which the 59-year-old victim shared with her boyfriend, Gregory Shinn, 48. While Shinn is a person of interest in the investigation, he has not been formally charged with a crime or publicly identified as a suspect by the police.

The incident unfolded on Feb. 20 when the victim’s boyfriend discovered her hanging in the garage. Instead of calling 911 himself, Shinn reportedly sought help from a neighbour, claiming that he did not have a phone. When questioned by authorities, Shinn stated that he had been in the bedroom watching YouTube videos and decided to check on his girlfriend after not hearing from her for some time.

Upon the arrival of paramedics, the victim was found with a black wire wrapped around her neck, connected to a beam in the garage. She had sustained multiple injuries, including cuts on her face, hand, and wrist, broken ribs, a neck fracture, and a brain hemorrhage. While Shinn alleged that the victim had been suicidal in the days leading up to her death, investigators believe that the injuries sustained were not consistent with a suicide by hanging.

Documents indicated that due to the severity of the victim’s injuries and the lack of alignment with typical hanging suicides, the case was classified as a suspicious death. Furthermore, Shinn had previously faced charges of domestic battery against the same victim on two occasions within the past three years. In an attempt to explain the victim’s injuries, Shinn claimed that she had accidentally struck a door with a sledgehammer during a garage project, causing it to fall on her.

Police subsequently obtained a search warrant to retrieve several items, including the wire used in the hanging, tools, home security footage, the victim’s diary, DNA evidence, and any electronic devices capable of confirming Shinn’s timeline of events. The diary, titled “My Feelings,” was of particular interest as a neighbour had advised the victim to document the alleged domestic abuse.

During the execution of the search warrant on Feb. 22, authorities seized various items from the residence, including two spools of black electrical wire, loose black electrical wire, assorted pliers and wire cutters, cameras, red stain gauze, a pillowcase, a fitted sheet, and a doorbell camera. Despite these developments, Pinellas County jail records indicate that Shinn has not been formally charged in connection with the victim’s death.
