Suspect Arrested in Connection with Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Southeast Edmonton

The Edmonton Police Service has announced the arrest of a suspect wanted in connection with a tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman in southeast Edmonton. The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday night in Wainwright, Alberta, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

According to RCMP reports, the fatal crash occurred late Saturday evening when a Fort Saskatchewan woman was inspecting her vehicle after driving over a police spike belt on 50th Street and 22nd Avenue S.W. A male suspect driving a U-Haul truck struck her, resulting in her untimely death. Additionally, another individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by the suspect’s vehicle following the collision with the spike belt.

Sequence of Events

The tragic incident unfolded after Beaumont RCMP attempted to arrest a suspect involved in theft around 9 p.m. The suspect’s vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, heading north on 50th Street into Edmonton from Beaumont. The suspect’s reckless actions led to the fatal collision that claimed the life of Kassandra Gartner, a beloved mother of three daughters and the executive director of the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank.

After the collision, the U-Haul truck did not stop and crashed near a convenience store close to the initial collision site. The suspect then proceeded to steal a dark grey Honda Civic parked outside a gas station, with a child inside the vehicle.

Fortunately, the child was found unharmed in the vicinity of 66th Street and 25th Avenue shortly after the theft. However, the suspect managed to flee the scene in the stolen Honda. On the following day, the abandoned Honda was discovered in a rural area outside Wainwright, providing law enforcement officials with a crucial lead in their investigation.

The arrest of the suspect brings a sense of closure to the community and the loved ones of the victim. The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate the incident to ensure justice is served for Kassandra Gartner and her family.
