Man Found Dead in School Bus in Waterville identified as Anthony Engelhardt

Waterville police have identified the man found dead in a school bus on Monday as Anthony Engelhardt, a 24-year-old resident of Naples. The discovery was made off West River Road, and it was determined that Engelhardt had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Details of the Incident

Anthony Engelhardt had no known connection to Waterville Public Schools and had driven to the city for reasons that remain unknown, Waterville police Chief William Bonney revealed in a press release. Police received a call around 4:30 a.m. on Monday reporting someone slumped over the steering wheel of a bus parked in the lot at Waterville Junior High School. Upon arrival, officers found Engelhardt dead, and detectives confirmed that it was an isolated incident with no threat to the public.

The body was then taken to the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, which determined the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As a result of the discovery, all Waterville Public Schools were closed on Monday.

Engelhardt’s Educational Journey

Engelhardt was a former student of Lake Region & Fryeburg Area Adult Education, where he was recognized as a successful student. He had dropped out of high school as a senior but later enrolled in adult education classes. After working hard in the HiSET diploma equivalency program, he graduated as an honor student with college and career-ready scores on all five exams.

Following his success at Lake Region & Fryeburg Area Adult Education, Engelhardt worked with the program’s college, career, and academic advisor. He was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Rotary Club of Bridgton-Lake Region and went on to enroll in Southern Maine Community College to pursue a major in cyber-security.

According to his mother’s obituary from February 2020, Engelhardt is survived by his sister, Hailey.
