Miami-Dade County Uber Driver Accused of Targeting Women
In Miami-Dade County, Florida, local police are concerned that there may be additional victims of a 49-year-old Uber driver who has been accused of preying on women he picked up while they were out at night.
Danny Maurad Avecillas faces charges of attempted kidnapping and fraud, with three women coming forward to accuse him of these crimes.
The case first came to light when a woman from California reported to police that she had been lured by Avecillas, possibly drugged, robbed, and sexually assaulted in a motel room in January. She woke up naked and disoriented, leading her to believe she had been given some kind of substance without her knowledge.
Following this initial report, two more women have been identified as victims of Avecillas’ alleged crimes.
Miami police Officer Kiara Delva stated, “Further investigation confirmed that this individual was using his position as a rideshare driver to target and victimize women.”
Both of the additional victims reported unauthorized charges on their credit cards, with one of them experiencing physical discomfort and pain in her pelvic and abdominal area. This prompted her to contact the authorities, who launched a thorough investigation into the matter.
A new police report revealed that Avecillas confessed to officers that he had taken advantage of multiple incoherent women by transporting them to motels and removing their belongings to allegedly “keep them safe.”
During his police interview, Avecillas opted to remain silent and requested legal representation. He is currently being held in custody without bail.
Uber has since confirmed that Avecillas has been banned from their platform.
