Tragic Death of Teacher at East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School
East Chicago Police are currently investigating the untimely death of a beloved teacher at the East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School. The tragic incident occurred over the weekend, leaving the school community in shock and mourning the loss of a dedicated educator.
A school official, Jessica Beasley, described the deceased teacher, Craig Jones, as an “amazing spirit” who had a positive impact on both students and staff. Jones, aged 47 and hailing from Gary, served as a special education teacher and basketball coach at the school.
According to a statement released by Beasley, Jones was deeply committed to the academic and personal growth of his students. His infectious positivity and laughter endeared him to all who knew him, both in the classroom and on the basketball court.

The circumstances surrounding Jones’ death are still under investigation by the East Chicago Police. On the morning of Friday, Feb. 23, officers responded to a call at the school’s premises and discovered Jones’s body on the second-floor stairwell landing. The authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time.
Preliminary findings suggest that Jones had informed his family on the previous day that he would be working late at the school. He subsequently called for a ride home at 10:30 p.m., but tragically, he never emerged from the building to meet his family member waiting outside. The following morning, maintenance personnel made the grim discovery of Jones’s lifeless body in the stairwell.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force has been called in to assist with the investigation, although there is currently no evidence to suggest foul play. The school community has been provided with grief counseling and support services to help them cope with the loss of their esteemed colleague.
As the investigation continues, the East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School mourns the loss of a dedicated teacher and mentor. Jones’s legacy of compassion and dedication will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
